They have a strong appreciation of students and love to extend hospitality to the University community. Retired with grown children, they look forward to the year ahead.

We are currently looking for one or two other girls to participate in the Green Ridge Lighthouse Program for the upcoming semester in January 2010. Please refer to previous post for the application process.

How to apply to be a program participant

Applications are now being received for the Winter 2009 program which begins the beginning of January in conjunction with the school year. To apply, complete the application form available below and send it to Green Ridge at the address elsewhere on this page. You will require three references, one of whom must be your pastor or an elder in your church.

Applications are processed as they are received and the 'deadline' for application is when all of the available positions are filled. Once you are accepted, you will be expected to pay the first month's program fee as confirmation of your participation.

The program is limited to three participants. As this is a residential program, all three participants will be of one gender. The gender for this year's program is female, as we currently have one university aged girl already participating in the program. Contact us for more information.

A Short Biography of Matt & Grace

Mat and Grace Court have spent the past eight years in the eastern townships. They attended both Champlain College and Bishop's University and have recently become teachers in the area. They met at Champlain and were married in the summer of 2007.

Mat moved to the townships from the Gaspe Peninsula to go to school. Aside from his studies, Mat has been a member of both the Champlain Cougars and the Bishop's Gaiters football teams. He is also a Canadian Powerlifting Champion. Through these experiences, Mat has learned to work hard, think harder and laugh loud. He has counselled and directed at various Christian camps and enjoys working with people of all ages.

A native of Lennoxville, Grace also played varsity sports at Bishop's University, where she was a member of the Lady Gaiter Rugby team. During her time at Champlain College, she also served in the Armed Forces Reserves. Coming from a family of six children, Grace has learned the value of patience as well as the value of friendship and cooperation. Grace has also directed and produced plays for young people and is looking forward to bringing her creativity and enthusiasm to the program.

Matt and Grace both share a passion for sharing the Gospel of Christ with young people. As the live-in mentors, they will provide day to day programming and guidance to student participants.

What is included in the program?

In keeping with our purpose, here are some of the elements which will be typical of the Lighthouse discipleship program:
1. Weekly attendance at a local Christian church. While the participants are invited to attend Green Ridge Baptist Church regularly, they are also welcome to maintain their relationship with their home church or another local church.
2. Reading 1-2 Christian books to be discussed with the mentor either one-on-one or as a group.
3. Weekly Lighthouse Family Night, consisting of dinner meal together, Bible study, prayer and dealing with life issues and Lighthouse issues.
4. Weekly accountability group (possibly over breakfast). Personal and/or shared bible study and prayer time are expected.
5. One-on-one mentoring and going through discipleship material.
6. Host student activity nights at the Lighthouse.
7. At least one ministry outreach to the local community or student population. This could be on an individual basis or shared with other Lighthouse participants, and could be original or adding onto an existing outreach program.

We recognize that the primary goal of a student at CEGEP or university is to complete their degree program. With this in mind, the study component of the Lighthouse program will be challenging but will not get in the way of full-time studies. Good time management skills will be expected of participants.

Seven Pillars of the Lighthouse program

The Lighthouse Student Mentoring Program is built on seven pillars:

CHRISTIAN STUDENT LEADERS: The purpose of the Lighthouse is to provide coaching and mentoring to students who have already made a commitment to Christ and have demonstrated a potential for leadership in the community or the church. The role of the program is to increase the depth and breadth of their relationship with Him.

RESIDENTIAL: The program is residential in nature, and participants will be required to ‘live in’ at the Lighthouse for the term of their commitment. Although the program will involve other students and non-residents in various activities, the central purpose is to develop the skills and abilities of the resident participants.

SHORT-TERM: The program will consist of one or more short-term commitments of one school year, or one summer season or both. We expect participants to make their commitment in writing and to fulfill their commitment both financially and in terms of time.

FINANCIALLY VIABLE: Although this program will be partially funded by Green Ridge as a mission, it is expected that all participants will contribute a reasonable amount towards the cost of the program and will contribute towards the operating costs of the Lighthouse. Participants will be responsible for their portion of costs for the duration of their commitment.

ACCOUNTABLE TO GREEN RIDGE: The Lighthouse, its Mentor and Participants will be accountable to Green Ridge Baptist Church for the respect of program policies, house rules, and for being an example of faithful living.

CONNECTED TO THE COMMUNITY: We expect participants to be outwardly active in the community and Green Ridge Baptist Church. While recognizing that students have a primary responsibility to successfully complete their studies, the Lighthouse is not a place of isolation, and participants are expected to be active in sharing their faith and fulfilling God’s call upon their lives – indeed this is the very purpose of the program.

CHRISTIAN MENTOR: In order to be successful, this program requires the leadership of a skilled and faithful Christian who will serve as the Mentor and who will provide direction to the program. Green Ridge Baptist Church is committed to engaging and actively supporting such an individual to ensure the success of the program.
